I meant to V but: 는다는 것이 (그만)

V + 은/는 다는 것이 shows that the intended effect of an action and its outcome were different. 그만 ...하다 highlights that a mistake was made:

일찍 일어난다는 것이 그만 늦잠을 잤어요.

I meant to get up early but I overslept.

김치전을 주문한다는 것이 그만 파전을 부탁했어요.

I meant to order kimchi pancakes but I mistakenly asked for spring onion pancakes.

친구의 역사 교과서를 빌려준다는 것이 그만 착각해서 틀린 책을 가져왔어요.

I meant to return my friend's history textbook but I got confused and brought the wrong book.

여자친구에게 감명을 준다는 것이 그만 그냥 저를 비웃였어요.

I meant to impress my girlfriend but she just laughed at me.

시험에서 높은 점수를 얻는다는 것이 그만 문제를 오해해서 낮은 점수를 받았어요.

I meant to get a high score in the test but I misunderstood the questions and got a low score.

시청에서 버스를 내린다는 것이 그만 알림을 듣지 않아서 정류장을 놓쳤어요.

I meant to get off the bus at City Hall but I didn't hear the announcement and missed my stop.

부장님께 메시지를 보낸다는 것이 그만 다른 동료에게 보냈어요.

I meant to send a message to my supervisor but I sent it to another colleague.
