Have you ever V-ed?: (본) 적 있어요?

Author
Written byLee Min-jung (이민정)

ㄴ/은 적 relates to experience, and 어/아 보다 in this case means 'to try'. So the structure asks if have you ever experienced something:

-- Have you ever been to Jeonju?

-- Yes I've been there.

-- No I've never been there.

Have you ever seen this movie?

I've met him before.

I've only met him once before.

I've never met him.

-- Have you ever eaten octopus?

-- Yes, I've tried octopus but it doesn't taste good.
