Extreme Outcomes (whenever I do V): 했다 하면

V + 했다 하면 is used to emphasise the extent to which someone does an action and the (often extreme) outcome. It is usually used to highlight 'addictive' or 'obsessive' behaviour.

Pronunciation tip: the 다 is often lengthened so you hear "했다아아 하면":

친구는 노래를 부르는 것을 좋아해서 다른 사람과 노래방에 갔다 하면 아무도 노래를 부를 수 없어요.

My Korean friend loves singing so when we go to Noraebang with other people, no one else gets to sing.

한국 학생들이 컴퓨터 게임을 좋아해서 PC방에 갔다 하면 밤에 새워요.

Korean students love computer games so whenever they go to a PC room they stay up all night.

서울 친구를 만났다 하면 항상 술을 너무 많이 마셔요.

Whenever I meet my friend from Seoul I always drink too much alcohol.

친구가 저에게 아내가 신세계 백화점에 갔다 하면 돈이 없을 때까지 쇼핑을 한대요.

My friend said whenever his wife goes to Shinsegae department store she shops until there is no money left.

지호 씨는 유행하는 운동화를 사는 것을 좋아해서 명동에 갔다 하면 새로운 운동화를 많이 사요.

Jiho loves to buy fashionable clothes so whenever we go to Myeongdong he buys a lot of new trainers.

어머니는 이야기를 하는 것을 좋아해서 저에게 전화를 했다 하면 3시간 이상 이야기를 해요.

My mother loves to talk so whenever she calls me we spend at least 3 hours talking.
