I can/can't do without...: 없어서는 안 되다, 없이 지내다

To show that you can do with or without something, 없다 (to be not) is combined with 지내다 (to pass) or  안 되다 (to fail to become):

**N + 없이 지내다: **to do without N, forgo N

돈이 없어서 이번 달에 사치품들 없이 지내야 해요.

There isn't enough money so this month we will have to do without luxuries.

조금만 TV를 보는 것이 없이 지낼 수 있어요.

I can only go without watching TV for a short time.

**N + 없어서는 안 되다: **can't do without N

음악을 만드는 것은 제 인생에서 없어서는 될 일이에요.

Music making is an integral part of my life.

여행 할 때마다 아이포드 없어서는 안 돼요.

When I'm travelling I can't do without my iPod.

한국 학생들이 휴대폰 없어서는 안 된 것 같아요.

It seems as though Korean students can't be without their mobile phones.

미국에 살다면 자동차 없어서는 안 돼요.

If you live in America, you can't do without a car.
